Defining Cultural Competence and Inclusiveness in Human Services

The most meaningful definition of Cultural Competence in human services is embodied in the commitment to a practical objective: that cultural differences are never allowed to be a barrier to full and complete delivery of services.

Cultural Competence does NOT require:

  • A lot of knowledge about other cultures and individual differences.

Cultural Competence DOES require:

  • Awareness of other cultures and individual differences,
  • Motivation to learn about and honor other cultural and individual norms, and
  • Commitment to take the time and resources necessary to assure respectful communication and collaboration with clients.

Cultural Exchange Committee

The Cultural Exchange Committee (CEC) explores inclusive ways to better serve the many unique cultures represented by the families and employees of EOCF. The CEC meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month, from 3:30-5 p.m., in the large conference room of Administrative Suite 207. EOCF staff, families, and community members are welcome to participate. The CEC supports and promotes the mission, values, and beliefs of EOCF and the comments of CEC participants are confidential. If you’d like more information, please call (360) 567-2727.
